Google Analytics MCP: what it gives Claude, and what it leaves out

A Google Analytics MCP is a connector that lets an AI assistant such as Claude read your GA4 reports and answer questions about them in plain language. It gives the assistant your data; it does not tell it which numbers to trust, what your company is aiming for, or what you already tried.

What a Google Analytics MCP is

MCP stands for Model Context Protocol, an open standard for connecting AI assistants to tools and data. A GA4 MCP server sits between Claude and the Google Analytics Data API: you ask a question, Claude turns it into a report request, and the answer comes back as a table Claude can read.

Google publishes its own Google Analytics MCP server, and there is an official Google Ads MCP as well. Several open-source projects bundle both with Search Console. For a founder who lives in Claude, this is the first time marketing data is one question away instead of five clicks deep in a dashboard.

    What you can ask it

Anything GA4 can report, without building the report yourself:

    • Which channels brought sessions and key events in the last 28 days, against the 28 before.
    • Which landing pages get traffic and convert nothing.
    • Which countries and devices your visitors come from.
    • How a campaign with a given UTM tag performed.

Used this way, Claude for marketing becomes a fast analyst. It is good at fetching and summarising. That is exactly where it stops.

What a raw GA4 MCP leaves out

The connector hands over tables. Three things a decision needs are not in a table:

    • Whether the numbers can be trusted. If your key events are not firing, or 90% of sessions show as Direct, every answer is confidently wrong. A raw MCP has no way to know.
    • What the company is trying to do. "Organic is up 12%" means one thing when the goal is demo requests and another when it is self-serve sign-ups.
    • What was already decided and tried. Without memory, the assistant will suggest the gated ebook you tested and dropped last quarter.

There is also the question of other sources. A Google Analytics MCP sees your site. Your ad spend lives in a Google Ads MCP, your revenue in a CRM. Each answers its own question; none of them reads the sources together, and reading them together is where the useful findings are: ad clicks from one country and converting sessions from another, or cheap clicks that never become won deals.

What to put on top of the data

Think of it as two layers. The data layer is the GA4 MCP, the Google Ads MCP and whatever else you connect. The judgment layer is what a head of growth would bring: a check on measurement, the company context, a weekly decision and a record of what happened next.

That second layer is what we built GrowthWise to be. The GrowthWise MCP gives Claude seven read-only tools: a Health Score that says how far your numbers can be trusted, this week's approved plan, your company profile and notes, metrics, channels and ads, history, and results measured two weeks after each task. It is not a replacement for a marketing MCP that fetches raw reports; it is the layer that tells Claude what the reports mean for your company this week.

    How to start

    1. If you only want to query GA4 from Claude, install a Google Analytics MCP and ask your first question. It takes minutes.
    2. Before you act on an answer, check your measurement. Our free GA4 audit reads your last eight weeks and gives a Health Score and three moves in about two minutes.
    3. If you want Claude to know your goals, your history and this week's plan, connect the GrowthWise MCP alongside it.
